This is a great restaurant. The specialty is seafood here... if you want to throw a party this is hands down the best place to rent out.

HELLO FOOD POISIONING!!! I got some serious food poisoning from the "homemade" salsa at this place. The owner insisted that we try it - both the tomato and the corn varieties - which were both tasty but man did I regret it afterwards. Oddly enough only been here twice and the first time I went here the cranberry juice I ordered tasted so "off" I was afraid to continue drinking it. And seriously folks, I am not a fussy person, never send anything back, never get food poisoning and never really worry about things tasting "off". There is something very odd going on at this place - be careful!!!!!

I used to love this place in its original location on 10th Avenue. The drinks were stiff and the atmosphere was welcoming. It's no fault of the business that they were priced out in a hyper real estate boom. The new location offers a lot more room and it has a lot of potential. But now promoting itself as a seafood restaurant on the West Side Highway, you get the impression that its days are numbered. I was part of a private party of about 25 people last week. The guests seemed to really enjoy the passed hors d'oeuvres, which I didn't eat. They appeared to be small fried seafood items, mini lobster rolls, mini cookies, etc. I had just returned from Cape Cod and had eaten a lot of very fresh seafood and the entire restaurant here smelled like fish sticks. I had several glasses of wine, which was fine and my friends complimented the cocktails. The problem? Sadly the building has had scaffolding up for months. Again, not the fault of the restaurant. But the fluorescent lights all the way around the storefront blast into the windows of every room of the bar really ruining the mood. The guests were all basically squinting without realizing it because it's so bothersome. As soon as there was an opportunity and the freebies quit flowing, people snuck out seeking a more friendly atmosphere elsewhere. On the way out, my friend mentioned this in a friendly way to the bar owner, to which she was very defensive, saying "you pay for it then." Umm, we don't own the place. I get it, it was the end of a long day and night and owning a small business is tough, especially a bar. After a few drinks, we may have been a little insensitive. But unless you listen to feedback you won't survive. We said what everyone in the group was saying. That is over 25 return customers lost. We were dragged over there for a party and had it been pleasant, some of us would have returned. In our business, we throw a party every four to six weeks. Put some window tint up, buy some curtains, invest $500 to make the environment warmer or you'll suffer. And when someone offers a criticism, say thank you, consider, and address it...even if you've had a long day.

Absolutely horrible. First impression was the smell of humidity/mildew. When the oysters finally arrived (after 25 min) there were miniscule, broken up and full of shells. After 45 min, our mains still hadn't arrived, and not a peep from the waitress or manager, who despite standing 3 feet away complete ignored us. When asked, the manager dismissed us without even looking in our direction, saying "oh we're a bit backed up." When I finally found the waitress, she meekly explained that the health dept had come and their kitchen was shut down..and that they were just STARTING our meals now. I realize these things can happen; had they made a minimal effort to communicate what was happening I could be understanding, but given the extremely unwelcoming and flat out rude service, this place earns minus one star from me.

Off-the-beaten-path location: Loved it. Chic, hip, fancy decor: Loved it. Dope tracks pumped by the friendliest owner/bartender: Loved it. $1.50 oystaaahsss combined with strong mutha F'in drinks for happy hour: Loved it. Buttery lobstaaaah roll, garlic bread, salmon crostini, tuna lollipops and deelish mac n' cheese: Loved it. Chillin with my homegurl in this spot: Loved it.

Such an unfortunate evening. We entered Bongo, and the manager sitting in a corner didn't move. We were half convinced they were closed. When we asked if we could have drinks and food, the manager responded with a snarky comment: "you better have at least one." We were originally seated in a room that contained a small but motley crew of characters but then decided to move to another room for more privacy. We sat in another open section and was told by the same woman, "don't make a mess...this room was cleaned already." Beg your pardon? The room wasn't roped off; the lights were on. Do you want customers in this nearly empty establishment? Try even a touch of hospitable decorum.

What a beautiful spot!!! Just went there today and fell in love with the decor and drinks. Beautifully set up in a lounge setting with a full menu and full bar, this place is a hidden gem! I'll be going there a lot more and definitely would recommend to any one in the area.

Had a great night here on Wednesday with my buddy (and fellow Yelper) Louis drinking and oystering it up. Pros: - $1.50 Oysters 5-8pm - Amazing L-roll and Mac & cheese ie: 2 of my fav foods - Music here is sick!! It's throwback hit after throwback hit. I literally asked if I could buy a copy of the playlist! - Killer Drinks. Loved the 395... quite girlie yes, but delicious nonetheless - Great space for a party. I would seriously consider throwing an event here. Andrea is cool as hell and will make sure you have a good time! Cons: - It's practically in the dirty Jerz... although this can also be seen as a Pro as it makes the place much more laid back and more neighborhoody. Solid crowd, solid company, solid service, solid snacks, solid oysters, solid beats. That's a whole lotta solid if you ask me... oh, and the drinks were super solid too, so solid liquids (ha, see what I did there?)

So according to Yelp, the oyster happy hour (5-8pm) was $1.25/oyster with a purchase of a drink. NOT TRUE! It's actually $1.50. Not a huge difference but still kinda annoying. They do have 4 varieties to choose from (2 east coast, 2 west coast) and they change depending on what their vendor feels like selling them. They had 4 types that I had never heard of but I really enjoyed the Discovery Bay oysters. Drinks here are pretty good but a little on the pricy side -- $10 for a mini martini and $14 for a regular one with Ultimat Vodka? Never heard of it but I'm not really a vodka connoisseur. It's a bit out of the way and requires a little trek from the subway. It's also right on West Street which is the precursor to the Westside Highway so traffic is pretty noisy. The facilities were nice, the waitress/bartender was a little aloof but also nice, and it seems like it might be a fun spot at night (especially for the gay crowd which they seem to cater to). Will I come back? Probably not.

Is that Don Draper in the corner?I felt like I stepped onto the set of Mad Men (minus the chain smoking). There is an attention to detail with retro-glass wear, furniture, wall hangings, and music. The bartender and server were very pleasant with great service. The drinks were well made (average price $10-$14). There is a happy hour for the oysters which were delicious. The food menu is mostly all seafood (average price $15-$20). This would be a great place to bring a group of friends or having a minor-sized party.

If you've just stumbled out of a club full of guidos, B&Ters and otherwise unsavory folk to hang out with and need a place to grab a strong, inventive cocktail where you can hear your own thoughts and not have your ass groped - this is the perfect escape. Plush couches galore. Especially love the grapefruit martini. Always pretty dead during the winter months, but tends to get a decent steady trickle from the clubs around the corner when it's warm and people are wandering about. Nice alternative in the area.

One of the weirdest places I've ever had a drink in (which, at an empty bar, took 5 minutes to get). My wine was terrible, the bartender was unfriendly, and given the portions I observed were pretty expensive and not worth it. It didn't even look that clean, to be honest, and with the attitude that was present, I would never step foot in here again.
(1)Amy R.
I didn't eat or drink here, but I think I got a pretty good idea of what the people who work here are like. There were 5 of us walking back from Hudson River Park after seeing a movie there. During the long walk back, we needed to stop somewhere and use a restroom. We came across Bongo and decided to stop there, since we could see through the windows that there were literally 5 or 6 patrons in the entire place. When we walked in, there was not an employee in SIGHT. No host/hostess, no bartenders, no waiters. What kind of place is open on a Friday night and has no staff manning it? I mean, seriously, we could have robbed the place if we wanted to. We waited a minute or two for someone to show up, but when no one did, we just went right into their restrooms. After my group used the restrooms, we re-convened in the lobby to leave the place. That's when a woman (didn't catch her name, but she was tall with long dark hair) appeared out of nowhere and asked us in a nasty tone if she could help us. We explained we were just using the restrooms, and in an even ruder tone of voice, she said, "WELL, the bathrooms are for CUSTOMERS ONLY, so I can't have all of you using them!" We told her we had already used the bathrooms and then she proceeded to call US rude. My sister was using an outlet that was completely out in the open to charge her phone while we waited for our friends to finish in the restrooms, and the woman employee said, "And it's REALLY rude for you to just use our outlets like that to charge your phone!" As we were walking out, we told her we would never return to this place, and she started shouting insults at us as we exited the restaurant. Okay, seriously? If the bathrooms are for customers only, why not put a sign? Or better yet, why not, oh I don't know, actually have EMPLOYEES working there to greet people and TELL US that it's customers-only?! Instead, we walked into an empty place, used their restrooms, and THEN got yelled at for doing so. Also, this woman was overly rude to us. If you're representing a restaurant, you really shouldn't behave like that. The way she was acting, you would think she was someone who stumbled in off the street, and not someone working at a supposedly "nice" restaurant/lounge. Overall, just a jaw-dropping experience, in the worst way possible.

I have lived in the west village for...ever and BONGO is what it's all about - friendly interesting people, great food and fantastic beverages. Run, dont walk to BONGO, especially as the sun sets over the Hudson, especially during oyster happy hour. Lobster rolls and potato chips taste like summer...and make sure you meet Sophia!
(5)roberta k.
This is one of my favorites in the neighborhood. The oyster happy hour is an amazing deal and the oysters are some of the best I have had. The Lobster Roll is superb. Also the cocktails contain a generous amount of alcohol and are incredibly tasty. I just had a happy hour event here. The owners are very accommodating. The living room layout is perfect for parties! I highly recommend.
(5)Frederick L.
Very cool little neighborhood spot. We love the feel of the room, it's like being in somebody's parents' living room. Great collection of vintage glassware etc. And the music is excellent. Will have to come back for food...only had drinks which were well mixed and reasonably priced for NYC. Then we went straight to some straight liquor and the tequila selection was way better than most bars (except for a 'tequileria' kind of place). Service good & hospitable and on point. Will go back. Recommended.

The lounge is located in the spot where the notorious 70s leather bar THE RAMROD was closed down because of an uzi shooting. With that kind of history, you wouldn't expect MELLOW. You'd be wrong. With music only in the background, loungy tables, soft lighting, couches and NO TVs!!! This is the perfect place to unwind... right by the Westside Highway. You won't notice the highway, though, as you relax with your compatriots, over a nice beer selection, an exotic cocktail menu and good seafood. It ain't cheap. It cost us $50 each and we drank nothing more than beer (but a lot of it). The oysters are $39 for a baker's dozen. It's best to skip the spot if you're on a tight budget. But if it's splurge night... or someone else is paying (seems like a great place to impress a date!), this is the place to splurge. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers.

How am I supposed to give them more stars if I've already given them a full rack?! Went back this weekend (the night before "The Rapture"). Didn't get any oysters this time, wanted to try their specialty cocktails instead. We loved EVERYTHING they brought to us, EVERYTHING! Pricey, a tad, but delicious and poured strong. Well worth it!
(5)Bill O.
The perfect late night post bar food and cocktail fix for Christopher streeters. Friendly staff/owner, fantastic space, and music (70's funk when I was there). Rarely do I feel compelled to write a review but this outfit is majorly deserving. On the one hand you could say that every hood should have one but on the other its a nice thing that this hot spot one of a kind remote outpost is just that: cool, hip and friendly. Ditch the tried and true alternatives on bleecker and the like, and make the effort to head riverside. You won't be sorry, revelers. Oh, and make sure you try the sublime lobster rollls. Mmm, mmmm...

three friends and i went there for quick bite and drink before a fiashion event at Pink. We stayed for like 5 min and letft. It was kinda gross. I felt like I was in a dirty basement... it a strange place. Didn't order a drink or food... since no one bothered to even ask if we wanted anything. No chance i would even felt comfortable eating there. It probably looks better at night when you can its dimly lit.

Well, I never did manage to get back here until yesterday which was again Manhattan Pride. This year I knew the area and the approximate location. However thanks to street closings on West St (or the West Side Highway whatever you want to call it), it was a little more cumbersome to get to. When I get there with a few other people with the New York City Anti-Violence Project, the bouncer let us in since the Director told her we were with her. They had a Pride special of $6 Pearl Vodka drinks. I had ordered a screwdriver with he Pearl Citron Vodka. Nice and strong. After my first drink I was ready for some food. Since this place is known for seafood., I ordered the "sticks and chips" starter which i didn't realize was a starter. They wanted a credit card to hold while they placed my order. It came out rather quickly. The fish was well seasoned and flaky. The chips were thin and crispy, also tasty. When I went back to order more drinks for myself, the bartender remembered my name which is unusual, especially for such a busy place as it was. Later I had to come back in because my ride was late and I wanted someplace to be for the pickup. Again, remembered my name even when they didn't have the benefit of a credit card to go by.

Found this place on yelp and had a great time. The decor is nice and cozy, like hanging out in someone's re-purposed basement. The oyster happy hour was wonderful, a great mix of oysters for $1.50! Not just blue point (not that I have anything against blue point). The servers/bartenders are sassy but sweet. Drinks were really strong and well made. It was a fun place! But still being sort of broke in the city this is probably going to be a once in a while place, the drinks we were drinking were $12ish which is just a little too much for us to make it a regular go to spot. But we did love it, it was a great experience, and we will be going back!

I really enjoyed this place when I was in NYC a couple weeks ago... The bartender was super nice and friendly and the service was awesome. Who would've guessed that he doubles as the DJ rocking tunes from his ipod to the speaker system. I had a bunch of friends meet me here while I was in town and everyone came and had a good time. A nice laid back spot to grab a drink and chat with friends. They even serve a random variety of food. The hummus was really good.

I went to Bongo for a private party and the staff was so hospitable. I am eager to return. The drinks are delicious and the eclectic decorations with colorful glass is a great small space that could be an awesome spot to celebrate an occasion with a small group. A must is the lobster roll and the mac and cheese hmm mmm mm
(4)Paul C.
Rude service, ok food, overpriced. I came with a group of 4, we had a groupon for 50% off a party platter which included - 8 oysters, 8 clams, 16 sliders (tuna, lobster, crab cake, fried clam), 4 drinks and 4 dessert shots. Nothing stood out - the raw selection was fine except the clams had a lot of grit, the tuna was overcooked, the rest of the sliders were pretty good. This was not nearly enough food, and without the groupon it would have been $240 - way overpriced. Also, the service was poor start to finish. When we made the reservation the host was adamant that 6pm was the only time open and that if we were late at all we would lose our spot. When we arrived, the place was empty (as it was when we left), and our waitress was very rude. I will not be returning.

This is one our favorite places in Chelsea. The food is great, the place is eclectic and cool, drinks are awesome, and the bartender/wait staff are very friendly and fun. It is a bit out of the way (we are somehow always walking 3-4 blocks west) but that gives it more charm when you actually get there, esp. for our friends that haven't been to it - like our own personal find. So, the review: Food: the oysters were truly fabulous. they were extremely fresh and they have a really great selection (and we know our oysters!) Really liked the lobster rolls, not the best I've EVER had, but certainly very tasty. The smoked trout was also pretty good but I really like smoked fish. Atmosphere: really fun, relaxed but interesting & cool - not boring or typical bar-like or lounge pretentious, great to go with friends or a date. And great music. We've been on dates and also brought business colleagues that wanted to go to a relaxed but interesting place. Drinks: a great list, very strong and a fun selection. Service: very sociable staff, eager to provide suggestions and chat if you want. Only reason that it is not 5 stars is the price. The drinks and oysters are priced reasonably for what they are (expensive!), but the rather small lobster rolls at $25 each are a bit of a stretch.
(4)H L.
Bongo is as much a spot to go to if you love seafood as it is if you appreciate great atmosphere. The oysters are fantastic. I'm typically not a fan of fish sticks, but I'll order theirs again for sure - they were the best I've ever had. The mid-century modern decor is comfortable, warm and provides just the right amount of attitude to make things interesting. Andrea, one of the owners, makes the best rum punch in New York. There's only good to say about Bongo... once you go, you'll want to go back.

I had to meet a friend in this area and we were walking around to find a place to sit and talk. First we came across Marquee. But I didnt want to go there and the next block we discovered this unassuming cozy bar. The bartender is friendly. Apparently he was the owner too. The crowd is classy. Almost everyone there was fashionably dressed. Atmosphere was friendly. Nice place to go out with friends and hang out. Not too loud, music is okay. I think it is the ambience which makes the difference.
(4)Katie C.
oooh yeah oysters! i can't believe i forgot about this place - i haven't been here in a year or so, but i was just reminded of it recently. i went here w/ some girlfriends and we shared this gigantic oyster dish with about 5 different kinds. They were all melt in your mouth delicious. We also took our waitresses suggestion and got this champagne cocktail that complimented the oysters so perfectly. I had a moment with those oysters, in fact this was the first time I had really tried them. It is a little pricey but if you're in the mood to splurge on some orgasmic oyster goodness - this is your place.
(5)Christina C.
I will never go to this bar ever again. My friend recommended it to me because I had a last minute change of plans for my birthday party. I had terrible service and they were very rude. I waited a half an hour for the bartender to give me a drink after I ordered it. I felt rushed through dinner even though the lobster roll was decent. Not worth the money. I had a large group coming and they told me they could not accommodate because they had a reservation for a large party. I told them that's ok and that we would wait for people to arrive and send them to another bar down the street. They served me a drink and my food and made me feel awful for staying. It's alright to say you can not accommodate a large group without a reservation but it is totally unnecessary to be blatantly rude and make your patrons feel rushed and uncomfortable, especially at that price. It ruined my birthday and my friends were really angry at me because they were treating so poorly. Awful. I will tell everybody I know, this is a terrible spot.
(1)Matt B.
Oysters are good at the $1.50 half off happy hour price but I'd never pay $3 for any oyster. Crabcake is off the hook and it is a great place to hang out.. just hard to get to but I would make the trek again.
(4)C. H.
I've been to a few awesome parties here for post art opening cocktails or celebratory events in general. The snacks are reasonably priced considering it's the W.V. and the drinks are expensive but more bang for your buck than most places downtown. The reto 60's-early 70's decor is not my style but it is done REALLY WELL and it feels super plush in that regard. The staff has always been attentive without being overly obtrusive or pushy and, in fact, pretty down to earth and really fun at times. This place is offbeat and in this case that is totally refreshing. It's not some formulaic bar situation and serves many functions from neighborhood watering hole to super chic event atmosphere. I would pretty much recommend this place to any one for anything. If you wanna go somewhere with a group, I would just call ahead to make sure it's not totally booked out for private functions (one time me and 5 friends couldn't sit down in one of the rooms because of them)... My bad. I should have called ahead and asked since it was a Saturday night and private parties seem to be whole purpose of the space. But overall it's cool, fun relaxing and totally off the grid of snotty, foodie, bullshit W.V. places but with all the good food (lobster roll bites, crab cake sandies) included. I love it here. I wish the A/C/E stopped at Bongo. I'll always come back here. Minus one star because I had to walk from the L train and because groupon fucked up with over selling or somehow overbooking.

Picture it: a snowy January Saturday night in NYC. A goodbye party for someone moving to the other coast. 25 people, many drinks, and a number of apps ordered. Given that setting and the sheer chaos that the 25 of us caused, I give it 3 stars, mostly because of the kitschy decor and the strong strong drinks. I am docking 2 stars from the 5 possible for a few reasons. 1. They weren't very nice to us, at first. They knew we were coming and yet the seemed almost annoyed that we arrived. But they warmed up. 2. As a veg, I don't eat fish, but word was the "famous lobster roll" was it was mediocore. However, the coleslaw was reportedly out of this world. So much so that there were a few orders of sides of cole slaw placed. 3. The hummus sucks. SUCKS! It's chunky and bland and dry. One of my friends was about to order it (she came late and missed the first round of apps), and I shook my head at her, and she looked at the waitress who, turns out, happens to be the chef and perhaps owner and says "Oh, never mind, the hummus isn't a hit," the owner/chef lady got PISSED. She was completely personally offended. Now, fine, it's her recipe and all, but that woman was furious with me for the rest of the night just because I said I didn't like her hummus. Needless to say, I stopped ordering anything after that for fear of her retribution.

Very cool little storefront restaurant. The decor is extremely retro - 1950's plastics in pastel colors (think the Jetsons on a very mild acid trip) - but comfortable. The drinks are *very* well poured and the staff is friendly. The menu is a grab-bag of seafod dishes, everything from mini tuna burgers to spicy oyster shooters. All of it is good - fresh, delicious and well-presented. The crowning achievement, though, is the lobster roll. It's incredible. Huge chunks of perfectly-seasoned lobster falling in waves out of a buttery, soft bun. When this arrives, all else becomes but a shadow - even, believe it or not, whatever drinks you may be having. It's just that good. Honest to God.

I went here during a trip to New York last December. Me and my friends were touring the area and randomly found this place. We were tired and looking for a place to rest, so why not. Fate has brought us here. It was a little chi-chi, but not too pretentious. The drinks were strong and pretty good, so I was happy about that. The place was very lounge-y and was a good place for me and my friends to have some good conversation. The bartender guy with the tattoos was really nice. My phone was dying and he let me plug my charger into an outlet behind the bar. Plus, he made my friend the wrong drink, but we didnt notice since it was a special kind of drink. The bartender noticed, so he made another drink for my friend and the one he made initially was on the house. classy move. I don't know if I'll have another opportunity to go to this place again since I'm a California boy, but it was nice and added a good memory to a fun-filled trip to New York. 4 stars!!
(4)Sarah W.
We found this place by accident but turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Cocktails were really great - we had Pomogranate saketini and grapefruit martini and etc. The place has retro deco-ed a bit like artsy Brooklyn. Crowds were cute and casually fashionable. This one guy was wearing a red plaid scottish skirt which was super cute - must be nearing St. Patrick's day~~ This place serves oysters and stuff.. Didn't have time to try but will next time. All of my friends loved it.

Dr. Bongo: Mad scientist makes killer cocktails. Ingenius! Devious! Nefarious! Addictive! These are the words to describe the list of cocktails created at the 10th avenue laboratory of Dr. Bongo. His evil plan works on me every time: concoct the most mouth watering, complex and irresistable drinks on the planet to separate me from my sobriety and my money. Damn you Dr. Bongo!!! Dr. Bongo's lair is small and almost too hip. The vintage modern furniture and retro glass objects recall the era of another evil genius doctor foiled by my colleague and Jenga partner, 007. The genius' lair always seems to be empty so there is hope yet that his evil plans will fail, which of course I will woefully regret. (Read in Sean Connery's voice) You may have won this time, Bongo, but this is not over!
(4)Nancy K.
I really like the low-key, kitschy atmosphere of this place. The drinks are great and the lobster rolls are yummy.
(4)Brad G.
Went Monday night. Its funky, i dig the cool retro glassware and the oysters are $1.25ea and delicious. Great place for a sophisticated drink and some nibbles.
(4)Daniel L.
Honestly, I don't remember the food very much, but I do recall it being a little pricey; however, I DO recall how brilliant they were with my guerrilla-amush bday party a few months ago. I basically emailed like 35 of my closer friends here in NYC and told them to come to Bongo at like 7:30pm. Who knew so many people would come? So even though I made no reservations, made no other kind of accommodation or gave them any other fair warning that I might have like 25 peeps rolling in their smallish establishment with fabu vintage modern furniture, they were so completely accommodating and cool with it. A lot of bloody stars for that, since, it IS New York and they totally could have cursed me out, cut my face and had me gang raped down the street at The Eagle or something. And to boot, they make ROCKIN' drinks. It's a place that impresses with its super-hip decor that is a '70s throwback, and because of that, makes you feel like downing some qualudes, finding some crisco and punch fuck someone like a Mapplethorpe photo or that famous scene in Caligula...you know what I'm talking about....no? Just me?
(4)Judy H.
Cool bar, lovely oysters, great cocktails. The owner-bartender duo were awesome and chatty (but not too chatty) and it became clear at some point that all the regulars knew each other. Fun place.
